Broadway Musical To Become Film 1/27/05
More and more Broadway musicals are being adapted into films, pointing to a new trend in which stage musicals are translated into big-screen extravaganzas. The musical hit, Chicago
, was made into an Academy Award-winning film starring Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Renee Zellweger. And Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway spectacle, The Phantom of the Opera, recently debuted as a film.
DreamWorks Pictures announced this month that it will adapt yet another musical hit, Dreamgirls, into a film. Screenwriter Bill Condon will direct the film, which is based on his screenplay. Condon wrote the script for
Chicago, Gods and Monsters, and Kinsey.
